At-Home Skincare

Currently, the world is collectively working towards minimizing any further spread of COVID-19, and the practice of social distancing has led to monumental shifts in all our lives. While navigating these times are tricky, it’s important to establish normalcy in our day-to-day actions, starting with an at-home routine.

At this time, in-clinic skincare treatments provided by professionals are not available for regular upkeep. However, you can always participate in maintaining healthy skin from the comfort of your own home!

We’ve covered our best tips and all the essentials for at-home skincare. Learn how you can develop, adjust, or add onto your current skincare regimen.

Use a Daily Moisturizer

Considering that skin is the human body’s largest organ, it only makes sense that we attend to it daily, including the crucial process of moisturizing.

Here in Ontario, frequently changing and harsh temperatures can often lead to dryness in the skin. Taking the preemptive measure of moisturizing your skin can combat these external forces, keeping your body’s armour healthy and intact.

When it comes to integrating a moisturizer in your at-home skincare routine, we recommend moisturizing after shaving, bathing, or exfoliating your body. Taking this step is important as hot water clears our bodies’ natural oils and moisture, leaving the skin dry. By moisturizing post-shower, we can rehydrate and restore our skin.

Finding the right moisturizer for your needs is also helpful in maintaining a successful at-home skincare routine. Generally, it’s best to find:

1. A product formulated with antioxidants and vitamins.
2. A product that matches your current skin type.

For those looking for a convenient timesaver, you can always look to invest in a high quality dual-action cleanser. This two-in-one product serves as both a moisturizer and cleanser, providing a fast solution that retains moisture while providing calming and soothing properties.

Ultimately, spending just five minutes to use a daily moisturizer can make a world of difference to your skin!

Have A Restful Night’s Sleep

During these times, we understand it can be difficult to focus on resting properly. Getting an optimal amount of sleep/rest is not just vital for good skin, but for your overall health.

Did you know staying well-rested contributes to healthy immune systems and skin? Studies have shown that sleep deprivation can cause skin to age, as those with limited sleep or chronic sleep issues have shown signs of premature aging.

The typical “tells” of poor rest are often identified as dark undereye circles or swelling, but a consistent shortage of sufficient sleep can lead to fine lines, diminished skin elasticity and uneven pigmentation. The cause for these symptoms are due to our skin cells only regenerating in the evenings, particularly between 11 p.m and 12 a.m. If we are not sleeping at a reasonable hour, the skin is unable to repair itself and that can ultimately lead to premature aging.

Cleanse Your Face Daily

Starting and ending your days with a clean face is critical for overnight skin cell regeneration, and overall skin health!

Washing your face to strip off facial products and makeup ensures your skin can breathe while removing environmental pollutants or other contaminants potentially affecting your skin’s condition. Additionally, consistent avoidance of facial cleansing can lead to the breakdown of collagen, therefore prematurely aging the skin.

There is a common misconception that everyone should be cleansing twice daily, but it depends on your unique skin needs and the recommendations provided by a medical professional. Invest in a cleanser without a harsh formula, and that both retains moisture and rejuvenates your skin for a healthy glow!

Increase Antioxidant Consumption

Naturally existing vitamins and minerals, such as vitamins C, A, and E, are also referred to as antioxidants. These antioxidants are excellent for improving skin health as they protect the skin from free radicals–molecules with the capability to weaken skin elasticity through clutching to collagen.

Not only do antioxidants combat free radicals, but they also have several other benefits such as smoothing fine lines, brightening skin, and creating a calming effect. In some cases, they can treat skin breakouts and improve texture.

Adding antioxidants to your daily routine is a must, whether it’s incorporating more vitamin-rich foods,or vitamin-rich skincare products.

Consume Enough Water

This tip is basic, but essential for maintaining healthy, beautiful skin in the long term. Proper hydration is helpful for overall health, but it also benefits the skin! Skin rejuvenation occurs when the body’s hydration is at optimal levels, keeping the skin healthy and avoiding premature aging. Ensure your daily skincare routine includes getting in enough water!

Use Sunscreen

We can’t stress how important applying sunscreen daily is! Although many of us are currently within closed spaces, it’s still a top priority. Protection from the sun’s harmful UVA rays are important for all skin types and ages.

Without the protection of a high SPF sunscreen product, you run the risk of being overexposed to sunlight which can lead to burnt skin in the short term, and potentially more serious effects in the long term. Some of these effects can include freckles, wrinkles, age spots, and in some cases, cancer.

Use sunscreen daily as a preventative measure to maintain and improve your skin and body’s overall health.

Invest in The Right Skincare System For You

Hopefully this guide to developing an at-home skincare regimen can help you on your journey to excellent skin! In addition to getting optimal rest, moisturizing, drinking water and exercising, investing in high quality, reputable products can significantly improve your skin’s appearance and health.
