Natural. Authentic.Conditions
Excessive sweating may not be life-threatening. But it can be emotionally and psychologically draining. Don’t worry, this is a common condition. It can be addressed. There are several treatments for excessive sweating that are highly effective. They will help rebuild your confidence.
First, let’s make it clear. There’s nothing wrong with sweating. It’s normal. It’s a natural process. It maintains the body’s optimal temperature. It prevents us from overheating.
However, some people have overactive sweat glands. They secrete more than needed to regulate body temperature. In medical terms, hyperhidrosis means excessive sweating. It is also known as polyhidrosis or sudorrhea.
According to the Canadian Dermatology Association, hyperhidrosis affects about 3% of the population. That is up to 950,000 Canadians. About 300,000 have severe cases.
When left unaddressed, studies show hyperhidrosis hurts quality of life. It is worse than similar conditions like acne and blemishes or psoriasis. It affects self-confidence, social life, and work productivity. It also impacts friendships, relationships, and clothing choices.
Unfortunately, not everyone with hyperhidrosis seeks help. They may not know it is a treatable condition.
There are two types of hyperhidrosis:
1. Focal Hyperhidrosis
This type usually starts in childhood or adolescence. It is not a symptom of other conditions. It is not a side effect of drugs. The exact cause is unknown. Sweating occurs in specific areas. It is symmetrical, affecting both sides equally. People with this type often need treatment for excessive sweating in these areas:
2. Generalized Hyperhidrosis
The other main type is caused by other factors. These include medical conditions like endocrine disorders, obesity, diabetes, menopause, nerve damage, or prescription drugs. Unlike focal hyperhidrosis, this type causes heavy sweating in larger areas. It often happens at night during sleep. This is known as night sweats.
Treatment depends on the severity of your case. Options include medications, topical treatments, Botox injections, and surgery. Secondary generalized hyperhidrosis is best treated by addressing the main medical condition causing it.
At APT Medical Aesthetics, we use Botox injections for facial rejuvenation. We also use them as a treatment for excessive sweating. When you visit our Oakville clinic, a medical expert will diagnose you. This includes a consultation and physical exam. A sweat test or lab tests may be needed to rule out other conditions.
Under a licensed skin specialist, a nurse will clean the area. They will apply numbing cream to reduce discomfort. Then, they inject a small dose of Botulinum toxin into your underarms.
Botox uses nerve blocking medications. It stops nerves from transmitting signals. It blocks the uptake of acetylcholine. This neurotransmitter tells muscles to contract. Botox paralyzes the muscles. It blocks the signal to your overactive sweat glands.
Botox is a localized treatment. It only works on the injected area. Other parts of your body can still sweat to regulate temperature.
Botox is a minimally-invasive cosmetic treatment. It can be used on the face and hands. But for excessive sweating, it is only approved for the underarms.
Studies show Botox treats palmoplantar hyperhidrosis in 80% to 90% of cases. However, results do not last as long as other underarm treatments. Evidence also suggests Botox can reduce forehead sweating by up to 75% for five months. More research is needed on Botox for sweaty feet.
Many patients notice a difference two to four days after treatment. The results continue to improve over two weeks.
Botox results last six to 12 months or longer. It depends on your metabolism. But Botox is not a permanent cure for hyperhidrosis. Our providers may recommend maintenance treatments every seven to 16 months. This keeps symptoms from returning.
If you want a life-changing treatment for excessive sweating, visit our Oakville clinic. APT Medical Aesthetics is a leading medical spa. We offer advanced beauty and skincare treatments. Our team of professional Botox injectors will guide you. We provide a comfortable and safe environment.

You may be suffering from hyperhidrosis. In most cases, hyperhidrosis is caused by overactive sweat glands and is treatable with Botox®. If your sweating is caused by other health factors, a visit to your doctor is recommended.
Botox® is a natural, purified protein with the ability to temporarily block the secretion of the chemical that is responsible for activating the body’s sweat glands. By blocking this chemical messenger, Botox® reduces sweating at the area where it has been injected. It may injected into the following areas: armpits, hands, feet, head, and face. It has been shown to decrease excessive sweating in the underarms by 82-87%, making it one of the most effective treatment options available for hyperhidrosis.
All Botox® treatments are performed by our qualified and experienced nurse injectors. If treating the underarms, your treatment will begin with a starch-iodine test to determine where your sweat glands are concentrated. During the procedure, a very fine needle is used to inject tiny amounts of Botox just under the skin intermittently throughout the area of excessive sweating. The treatment takes approximately 20 minutes and there is no downtime.
Results begin to be noticeable 2-4 days after the treatment, with full effects occurring within two weeks. Results generally last 6-12 months, or longer in some individuals, before symptoms gradually return. Since Botox® is not a cure for hyperhidrosis, it is recommended that the treatment be repeated as necessary, generally every 7-16 months.
Although not covered by OHIP, Botox® for hyperhidrosis is often covered by third-party health insurance. If your insurance does not cover the treatment you may be eligible for the treatment though Allergan’s Botox® Access Program. Please contact us for more details.
