What It Is

As we start to age, our natural production of collagen and elastin starts to decrease. This results in a loss of volume and may cause sagging, folds, and an increase in skin laxity. 

Sculptra is a minimally invasive injectable treatment that can naturally help restore your skin’s collagen and elastin. It contains poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) which is a biocompatible and bioabsorbable molecule that stimulates collagen production. It is injected into the deep dermis layer of the skin where collagen formation takes place. This will allow your skin to naturally produce collagen over the course of 3-6 months to help restore the loss of volume and skin laxity. 

In comparison to dermal fillers, Sculptra helps to stimulate collagen production for natural, long-lasting results.

How to Prepare

Before receiving a treatment, you will meet with a nurse injector for a consultation who will create an individualized treatment plan based on your unique goals and concerns. They will also determine how much product is required to reach your treatment goal. 

Leading up to the treatment, it is recommended to do the following to ensure you are well prepared to decrease the risk of any potential side effects and complications: 

• Schedule your treatment at least 2 weeks before a major social event to allow time for any swelling/bruising 
• Avoid alcohol 24-48 hours before your treatment 
• Prepare your skin with your regular skincare routine to ensure it is optimally hydrated
• Use sunscreen to protect your skin from any UV damage and skin irritations 
• Avoid the use of blood thinners, if possible, for 24-48 hours before your treatment to reduce the risk of bruising, including: Aspirin, ibuprofen, Omega-3 supplements 

How It Works

Once your treatment plan has been established with a nurse injector, you will then be able to undergo a Sculptra treatment! The treatment can take approximately 30-45 minutes, and that’s really it! Although the treatment is a minimally invasive injectable procedure, there may be some swelling, bruising, and tenderness immediately after the treatment. Not to worry! The immediate discomfort is temporary and will begin to gradually decrease within the next 24 hours.

Results You Can Expect

With all Sculptra treatments, results can be seen as early as 3-6 months after your initial treatment. Results will depend on your skin’s ability to naturally create collagen and elastin. This process can take anywhere between 3-6 months after your treatment and varies between patients. Depending on the severity of your loss of volume, you may need multiple treatments for optimal results and to maintain your results. Clinical studies have shown results lasting up to 25 months post-treatment!

Potential Complications

With all medical procedures, potential complications are a common concern for patients. The most common concern is that it may look too obvious that you had some work done. Not to worry! Our nurse injectors are highly experienced at APT Medical Aesthetics and will always ensure patients leave feeling their best while still maintaining their natural features. 

The great thing about Sculptra is that it is bioabsorbable, meaning it will be absorbed back into your skin to naturally build collagen for lift and rejuvenation! 

With all injectable procedures, it is common for patients to experience some immediate swelling, redness and bruising. Most patients are able to resume their normal activities after the treatment without any issues. 

Below are a list of things to keep in mind when you’re recovering and enjoying your results! 

• Avoid alcohol for 24 hours post-treatment to avoid excessive bruising
• Avoid exposure to heat and sun for 24 hours post-treatment 
• Use sunscreen to protect your skin when stepping outside 
• Avoid strenuous activities and exercise that will induce sweating for 24 hours post-treatment 
• Use cold compresses to the treatment areas as needed to help reduce swelling and tenderness
