What It Is

For as long as women and men have been concerned about ageing, there have been promises of younger-looking skin.

Skin is in a state of constant turnover, with new cells being created in the deepest layers. This process includes gene expression, which is how a cell receives its genetic code and is a critical part of how skin ages. As more genes associated with ageing are activated over time, the structure and appearance of skin changes. There was no way to change it back… until now.

Treatment Areas

Any area of concern on your body can be treated with Forever Young BBL™. However, the most commonly treated areas are the ones that are the most exposed to the damaging effects of sunlight. This includes the face, neck, back of the hands, chest and shoulders.

How to Prepare

Prior to your BBL™ treatment, avoid any kind of prolonged sun exposure for four weeks. Sunburned or tanned skin during treatment will increase the risk of side effects such as blistering or permanent skin discolouration. This includes the use of self-tanning lotions in the month prior to treatment as well.

There are some medications that you should avoid taking or using, including Retin-A, Renova and Differin for a week prior to your treatment.

Additionally, inform your Medical Aesthetician or Laser Specialist of any kind of skin sensitivities or viruses you may have such as herpes, cold sores or fever blisters. In these instances, it is recommended that you take a Valtrex 500mg tablet two times a day for five days leading up to your treatment. Lasers can cause the same reaction as sunlight, which can lead to more serious complications.

How It Works

Ground-breaking research performed at Stanford University shows that BBL™ influences gene expression, and changes skin at a molecular level. The study showed that literally hundreds of genes that are known to be associated with younger skin were activated while others associated with aging, were turned off.

In addition, a long-term clinical study showed that patients who received regular BBL™ treatments over the course of a decade were judged by doctors to appear 11 years younger than their actual age at the study’s end. In other words, they looked younger than when they started the study.

During the actual procedure, your eyes will be protected with safety shields or glasses. You may briefly feel a warm or quick snapping sensation as the light is absorbed by the targeted areas. Your procedure will typically take up to 30 minutes or less.

Forever Young BBL™ reaches deep into the cell and activates certain genes associated with youth while turning off other genes tied to ageing. As a result, you create more of the kinds of proteins and other building blocks you had when you were younger. New skin cells are actually programmed to be younger, giving you beautiful, youthful skin.

Results You Can Expect

The number of treatments needed varies from patient to patient, and your medical aesthetician will personalize a treatment plan based on the level of improvement you desire. Your aesthetician may also combine your treatment with other popular aesthetic procedures to optimize your results.

Your treated skin will feel smoother, pores will be less noticeable, and sunspots or uneven pigmentation will fade. Results depend on your condition, the number of treatments and the area treated. Your clinician will provide you with complete information about post-treatment care and results.

Remember that regular treatments at least once a year have been proven to stop the ageing process, allowing patients to look younger than they did when they started treatment 10 years prior.

Aftercare and Recovery

This is a non-invasive procedure with virtually no downtime. In most cases, you are able to return to work, apply makeup and resume normal activities immediately after the treatment.

You may experience some redness that should resolve within a few hours. For some pigmented lesions, you will see a darkening of the treated area(s) followed by fading and flaking off at a later stage. These symptoms should typically last for two to four hours following the procedure. Applying a cool compress for 10-20 minutes can help to temporarily alleviate any discomfort. Additionally, mild pain relievers such as Ibuprofen, Aleve, Advil, Tylenol or Motrin can be taken.

You may notice brown patches or spots within two to three days after the procedure, eventually becoming even darker and more scaly in texture. After a week or two, these dark patches will fall off on their own, leaving in their place newer, healthier skin. It is incredibly important to not pick or scrub at these spots, no matter how tempting it may be.

It is important to follow your clinician’s treatment plan and avoid direct sun exposure following the treatment. In order to protect your results, the daily use of sunblock of at least SPF 30 is highly recommended.

Potential Complications

While adverse reactions to the Forever Young BBL™ laser treatment are rare, in these instances, you may experience a variety of side effects, including:

• Blistering
• Scabbing
• Scarring
• Hyperpigmentation
• Hypopigmentation
• Bruising

During your initial consultation, your Medical Aesthetician will go over all potential risks of this treatment option, and whether or not you would make a great candidate for it. To prevent most of these reactions, prolonged sun exposure should be avoided for at least four weeks before and after your treatment.
