What Is Acne?

In Canada, acne affects 5.6 million people. That is 20 percent of the country’s population. It’s a chronic skin condition. Hair follicles get clogged with excess sebum oil and dead skin cells. Cutibacterium acnes (C. acnes) is a slow-growing bacteria found deep within the pores. It worsens the blockage and inflammation.

Most people experience acne during adolescence (90 percent). Others struggle with it during adulthood (20 to 30 percent). Anyone can get acne at one point in their life. Women are 75 percent more likely to develop acne than men.

Common Causes of Acne

Several factors can trigger acne. These include but are not limited to:

  • Genetics – Overactive sebaceous glands or parents with acne increase your risk.
  • Cosmetics – Products that are not non-comedogenic can clog your pores.
  • Medications – Acne is a side effect of some drugs. Examples are oral corticosteroids, some contraceptive pills (progestin), and anticonvulsives.
  • Hormones – Women get worse breakouts during their period, pregnancy, or due to hormonal imbalance.
  • Diet and Lifestyle – High stress, pollution, excessive sweating, certain foods, or lack of sleep can trigger a flareup.

Seek a safe and effective acne treatment. Also, look out for things causing or worsening your acne.

Types of Acne

Identifying your acne type is critical. It helps determine the right treatment solution for you.

Blackheads and Whiteheads

These are open and closed comedones. They are non-inflammatory acne. They appear as black or white bumps on the nose, chin, or forehead. They are mild and do not leave acne scars.

Papules

Papules happen when whiteheads or blackheads worsen. They irritate the surrounding skin. This is a mild inflammatory acne. Papules are tiny, red bumps under the skin. They can be tender and swollen.

Pustules or Pimples

Pustules are bigger than papules. They have a circular shape. The center is filled with white or yellow pus. They are inflammatory and swollen. The base is pink or red.

Nodules

Nodules are a severe and deeper type of acne. They are hard and painful when touched. Nodules can leave dark spots and acne scars.

Cystic Acne

Cystic acne has large, soft, painful red or white lumps. They are filled with pus. They form deeper in the skin than nodules. They are the most extreme type. They often leave severe acne scarring.

Here are some of our most successful acne treatments:

Medical-Grade Skincare

Patients with mild acne, like blackheads and whiteheads, see dramatic improvement. A disciplined routine with medical-grade products helps. They may also be prescribed for moderate to severe acne. This supports results from chemical peels or laser resurfacing.

HydraFacial

HydraFacial is a revolutionary acne treatment. It is non-invasive. It uses patented Vortex technology to penetrate the skin. It removes deep-seated dirt and acne-causing bacteria. It also enhances acne scars and minimizes enlarged pores. It is comfortable with no downtime.

Forever Clear BBL

Forever Clear BBL banishes acne without creams. It uses laser light technology. It is virtually painless. It comes with little to no downtime.

What Areas Can Be Treated for Acne?

Most acne cases (99 percent) occur on the face. Half also struggle with acne on the neck, back, chest, and arms. At APT, we use HydraFacial, Forever Clear BBL, and other treatments on these areas.

Results You Can Expect from Acne Treatments

Results vary by severity and treatment type. Most clients see improvements after the first session. Their skin is less inflamed. It becomes brighter. Pimples dry and heal faster than usual.

As you continue treatment, new breakouts stop. Flareups no longer become red, angry, or pus-filled. Over time, your acne problem will be gone for good.

APT’s treatments—HydraFacial and Forever Clear BBL—boost collagen and elastin production. Acne blemishes and scars are also corrected.

How Long Do Acne Treatment Results Last?

Your doctor will recommend 3 to 4 treatments. They are spaced a week apart. Most results last for 4 to 6 weeks. Follow-up treatments may be suggested. The frequency of sessions gradually reduces as your condition improves.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Acne is a common skin care problem. It occurs when pores become clogged by a combination of an oily substance produced by the skin called sebum, dirt, and dead skin cells. The visible result is acne, which is the term used to describe blackheads, whiteheads, pimples, and cysts. Acne usually appears on the face and neck but it can include shoulders, back, and arms.

Breakouts and triggers can vary from person to person. Some triggers can include: Cosmetics - look for the following acne-friendly terms on product labels: “oil-free”, “non-comedogenic”, or “non-acnegenic”. Pressure and friction - hats, helmets, bra straps and other tight clothing can lead to localized acne that develops at the point of skin contact. Sweating - for some people, sweating can lead to clogged pores, especially if trapped under clothing. Overwashing - scrubbing/exfoliating, or using strong cleansers or astringent products can actually strip the skin and irritate it. Medications - some medications can cause acne to flare up. Check with your doctor. Menstrual cycle and hormone fluctuations. Picking - touching, squeezing or popping pimples can lead to possible infection and scarring. Food - certain foods can aggravate acne. Try removing them from your diet.

Eating greasy food causes acne. Scientific studies have not been able to prove this, but if you notice that a specific food triggers a break out, try to avoid it. Poor hygiene. Acne is not caused by dirty skin. In fact, over-washing vigorously can actually make acne worse. Acne will clear up on its own. While acne may clear up, it can get worse before it gets better and the longer you have acne the greater chance you have for permanent scarring. You can get acne from someone else. Acne is absolutely NOT contagious. Sun exposure and tanning can clear acne. While the sun can initially dry skin and surface oil, this is temporary. In fact, people will often have an acne flare-up after UV exposure, not to mention a higher risk of skin cancer.

This is known as post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) – a change in the colour of skin that has undergone trauma. PIH typically resolves on its own, however it may linger for weeks or months. Certain skin types are also more prone to PIH. The best way to prevent PIH is to minimize acne breakouts. When a breakout does occur, avoid the temptation to squeeze or pick. Further trauma to the skin will most certainly lead to PIH which will last far longer than the pimple itself. For stubborn PIH, clinical peels, laser treatments and medical grade skincare can help it fade faster.
