What Are Fine Lines and Wrinkles?

Wrinkles and Fine Lines - before
Wrinkles and Fine Lines - After

Fine lines and wrinkles are the most common signs of aging. Collagen and elastin breakdown in the skin causes them. As we age, our bodies cannot produce enough collagen. The skin loses its natural elasticity over time. Many people feel uncomfortable about fine lines. That is why wrinkle treatments are sought to reduce these signs on the face and neck.

Common Causes of Fine Lines and Wrinkles

Here are some causes of fine lines and wrinkles:

  • Aging – As we get older, skin becomes more fragile and less elastic. Natural oil production decreases, drying out the skin. This makes the face appear more wrinkled. Aging also reduces fat in deeper skin layers. This causes loose, saggy skin and enhances fine lines and wrinkles.
  • Exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light – Ultraviolet radiation speeds up natural aging. It is the primary cause of fine lines and wrinkles. Unprotected UV exposure breaks down connective tissue in the dermis. UV rays create free radicals in the skin. This damages elastin fibres, leading to wrinkles and skin cancer.
  • Smoking – Nicotine from smoking accelerates the aging process. It contributes to fine lines and wrinkles. Smoking also affects collagen production. This increases the appearance of facial lines.
  • Repeated facial expressions – Facial movements like squinting cause early fine lines. Each muscle use creates grooves beneath the skin. Aging causes loss of elasticity in these muscles. This creates fine lines and wrinkles on the face.

Wrinkle Treatment Options

Several treatment options exist for fine lines and wrinkles. The choice depends on the cause and severity.

The first step is a free consultation with us. We find the underlying cause of your fine lines. Our trained professionals provide a thorough skin analysis. They will determine the ideal wrinkle treatment for your needs.

This can include, but is not limited to:

How to Treat Fine Lines and Wrinkles

Sunscreen Protection

Sun exposure can worsen fine lines and wrinkles. At APT, we always advise using sunscreen. Our medical-grade products include the Colorescience Sunforgettable® Total Protection. It has an all-mineral skin shield for broad-spectrum protection. It comes in different shades for all skin types. It offers SPF 50 UVB protection.

Botox®

Botulinum Toxin, known as Botox®, treats fine lines safely. An aesthetic professional injects it with an ultra-thin applicator. This wrinkle treatment prevents involuntary muscle contractions. It stops the formation of fine lines and wrinkles. Botox® relaxes muscles in areas with repeated movement.

Halo™ Laser

This is the world’s first hybrid fractional laser. It combines non-ablative and ablative wavelengths. This gives deep dermal rejuvenation and epidermal renewal. It restores skin radiance and a youthful glow. It reduces fine lines on the face, neck, chest, arms, and hands. This wrinkle treatment boosts collagen production in deep skin layers.

Results You Can Expect

Results vary based on your recommended treatment. All our options yield positive results. They promise a total skin rejuvenating experience.

After laser treatment, expect a clearer complexion immediately. It corrects uneven skin tone. It removes visible blemishes and discolouration.

Treatments for fine lines also address:

  • Oily skin;
  • Acne breakouts;
  • Uneven skin tone;
  • Crows feet; and
  • Marionette lines.

How Long Do Treatment Results Last?

Result longevity depends on your treatment type. Some patients choose multiple treatments. This ensures longer-lasting results for up to 12 months.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

If you see the lines when your face is at rest, they are considered static wrinkles. Although wrinkle treatment is indicated for active wrinkles, you will likely find that the static lines also improve over time. If your lines are particularly deep and bothersome even after wrinkle treatment, then dermal filler treatment may be an option.

Wrinkle treatment simply relaxes the muscles that create wrinkles, and is intended to create a softer and more refreshed appearance. When performed by an experienced injector, results from your wrinkle treatment will look and feel completely natural.

Wrinkle treatment is indicated for the following areas of the face: frown line, forehead lines, and crows feet. If the lines are on other areas of the face, such as the cheeks, there are other options available that are more suitable. These include laser skin resurfacing and microneedling.

Get plenty of rest. Lack of sleep shows on your face. Wear sunglasses on sunny days - excessive squinting can cause crow's feet. Reduce stress. It can lead to frown and forehead lines. The sun is responsible for 90% of visible skin aging. Therefore, apply broad-spectrum sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) EVERY DAY, regardless of the weather. It is a good idea to cover exposed areas of your skin when spending extended periods of time in the sun. If you spend a lot of time in your car, a clear sun-protective screen on your window can be helpful. Studies show that wrinkles and other signs of aging are more prominent on the left side of face due to the amount of time we spend driving.

Retinol is a gold-standard ingredient that is clinically proven to improve wrinkles and photodamage. It works by increasing cellular turnover, leading to healthier and younger-looking skin. Retinol can be found in many products, however only medical grade products contain the concentration of retinol necessary to generate impressive results. Of course, daily use of a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher is absolutely necessary in order to obtain maximum results of any retinol product.
