Juvederm®

Juvederm® - Before
Juvederm® - After

Juvederm is a hyaluronic acid filler, which is used to fill areas where wrinkles, scarring, or fine lines are present and visible on the skin. In other cases, Juvederm can be used in order to add volume to areas such as the lips, chin, and jaw. There are currently a number of different Juvederm products available on the market, each of which offers its own unique benefit. It’s one of the most popular dermal filler products thanks to its efficacy and proven track record of results.

Juvederm can help with:

  • Lip filling
  • Scarring
  • Smile lines
  • Worry lines
  • Severe wrinkles
  • Marionette lines

Treatment Areas

Juvederm can be used to treat a number of different areas. Although it is most commonly used on the cheeks, forehead, and lips, it can also provide assistance to the chin and jaw when it comes to adding volume and giving the appearance of youth.

  • Face (cheeks, forehead)
  • Chin
  • Jaw
  • Lips

How to Prepare

Juvederm takes the form of a dermal injection carried out by a licensed professional nurse working in conjunction with a medical doctor or nurse practitioner. Before the treatment, there are a few different things you can do in order to prepare. If you take blood-thinning medication, it’s best that you discontinue the use of those medications for at least one week before the treatment commences. Alcohol use (especially red wine) should be ceased 1-2 days before the injections that take place, as should aspirin, anti-inflammatory medications, Vitamin E, fish oil, St. John’s Wort, and Ginkgo Biloba.

Arnica Montana 12X can be taken 2-3 days before the treatment begins. Arnica is a dietary supplement that is readily available, and its use in this instance is to reduce bleeding and inflammation, both of which are a good thing to take care of before any kind of dermal injection Directly before the injections, apply a cold pack to the area where you’ll be receiving Juvederm for between 5 and 15 minutes. This is to constrict the blood vessels and lower the risk of a bruise forming after the treatment takes place.

How It Works

Juvederm is a hyaluronic acid filler, which is a substance that occurs naturally within the human body. This drastically decreases the possibility of an allergic reaction, making Juvederm more effective in that regard than older filler types such as collagen. Hyaluronic acid attracts water in your skin so it can improve the appearance of suppleness and smoothness in the skin. Hyaluronic acid naturally diminishes as we age, and Juvederm works to replenish any of the acids that have been lost throughout the ageing process.

Results You Can Expect

Juvederm will clear up lines and creases around the mouth, nose, and forehead. While it does not change skin pigmentation, it can greatly improve the appearance of acne scars, and can be used to enhance the size and shape of the lips. The results you can expect to see are powerful and rejuvenating and will last significantly longer than older kinds of filler products, making Juvederm an excellent replacement product for the likes of collagen.

Aftercare and Recovery

Recovery from Juvederm can take a number of different forms and will depend largely on your own skin patterns and how well it responds to the injection. It’s very common for patients to experience some irregularities, most often in the form of swelling. In the majority of cases, these instances of swelling and similar issues will resolve themselves and are nothing to be unduly concerned about. Bruising is also a possibility with any kind of dermal injectable and is similarly nothing to be worried about as it will resolve itself quickly and painlessly. There could also be some extra fullness in the areas injected, which will generally resolve between 10-14 days at which point the results will have softened.

For the first day after treatment, patients should try to avoid touching or rubbing the treated area as this could delay the recovery of the skin. Any bruises can be obscured using small amounts of concealer if necessary. Strenuous exercise should also be avoided for the first 24 hours after the Juvederm treatment.

For the first two weeks, after the treatment takes place, it’s best to avoid the unnecessary sun and cold exposure, as well as any alcohol. It’s best to wait until at least a week after the treatment, once the filler has settled, in order to assess the results. Two weeks is even better, in order to allow any bruising and swelling to subside so final results can be assessed.

Potential Complications

If you’ve ever had a cold sore around the mouth or near a Juvederm injection site, this is something you must mention to your doctor before the treatment begins. In order to prevent any kind of outbreak, it’s likely that an antiviral medication will be prescribed.

The most common side effects of treatment are mild and include minor pain, itching, tenderness, redness, or temporary lumps and bumps around the injection area. Serious side effects can happen with filler treatments which your medical professional will discuss with you prior to performing the treatment. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, you will need to postpone your treatments. If you have had any major illnesses in the past or cosmetic issues to do with the skin in your face, your medical professional will discuss this with you prior to your treatment. It’s unlikely that anything will encourage the doctor to advise against Juvederm treatment, but as with all injectable cosmetic treatments, it’s best to err on the safe side to prevent any unwanted complications from arising.
