What Is Facial Volume Loss?

Loss of facial volume occurs naturally due to aging. It typically first appears in the lower part of the face. Certain areas lose their plumpness and structure. This happens as fat decreases and natural collagen production slows. The body’s production of hyaluronic acid also diminishes. This leaves the skin dehydrated and gaunt.

Facial volume loss can be accelerated by several factors. These include:

  • Rapid weight loss – Losing too much weight too fast can lead to volume loss. It also causes sagging skin around the face and body.
  • Chronic sun exposure – Harmful UV rays penetrate the skin. They speed up the breakdown of collagen and elastin. This leads to sun damage like volume loss, dryness, and sunspots.
  • Excessive stress – Stress causes free radical damage. This accelerates the effects of aging.
  • Smoking and nicotine exposureSmokers have a depleted supply of vitamin C. This leads to thinning skin layers. It also causes muscle tone deterioration and reduced collagen and elastin.
  • Maxillofacial trauma – Physical trauma or injury to the face can result in volume loss.
  • An underlying medical condition – Many illnesses cause severe symptoms. These can lead to weight loss and facial volume loss. If you have unexplained volume loss, see your doctor immediately.
  • Hormonal imbalance – As women age, estrogen supply decreases. This hormone communicates how much volume is needed in certain areas.

Facial Volume Loss in the Cheeks

Sagging cheeks are caused by loss of facial fat. This pulls the skin downwards. It also moves the eye area to a lower position. Flat cheeks with loose skin where the jaw meets the neck are called jowls.

Facial Volume Loss in the Under-Eye Area

Volume loss around the eyes can be seen near the eyebrows. It also appears in the under-eye area. Loss of orbital fat in the lower eyelids can create hollow eyes. These are called tear-trough hollows or under-eye hollows.

Facial Volume Loss in the Lips

Fine lines around the mouth are the first sign of volume loss in the lips. The full lips from your youth start to deflate. They lose their definition and become thinner and smaller.

Other signs include deepening of nasolabial folds. These are parentheses lines from the nose to the mouth corner. Marionette lines from the mouth corner to the chin also appear. Hollowing of the temples is another indication.

Treatment Options for Facial Volume Loss

Aging may be inevitable. But facial volume loss is no longer a big problem. Modern technology offers minimally-invasive and non-surgical procedures. Facial volume loss treatment is effectively done with dermal fillers. At APT Medical Aesthetics, we offer various dermal filler injections to rejuvenate your appearance without downtime.

Juvederm

Juvederm is a hyaluronic acid (HA) dermal filler. It shows promising results for facial volume loss. It also treats fine lines and wrinkles and depressed scars. This product can be used in different areas. It addresses sagging cheeks, lifts jowls, and adds definition to lips and the jawline.

Radiesse

Radiesse is an injectable dermal filler treatment. It uses non-toxic calcium hydroxylapatite (CaHa) microspheres. It effectively adds volume and definition to the chin, nose, cheeks, and forehead. This achieves a more chiselled or contoured effect. Radiesse can also be used for the treatment of aging hands.

Results You Can Expect

Dermal fillers can work wonders for facial volume loss. It is a quick, in-office procedure. It lasts as little as 15 minutes. For best results, wait a week or two. This allows the products to settle completely.

With Radiesse and Juvederm, you see results immediately. Notice how your facial contours become more refined. The symmetry of your features improves. Your cheeks no longer sag. They are tightened and lifted. Loose skin around the jawline is replaced with a better bone structure.

Radiesse offers continuous improvements for two years. Its CaHa component promotes new collagen in the skin. This gives you a more youthful appearance for longer.

How Long Do Treatment Results Last?

Dermal fillers with hyaluronic acid offer temporary results. These last 6 to 12 months or sometimes longer. It depends on how fast your body metabolizes the product. Radiesse reportedly lasts for up to 15 months.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

As we age, volume loss in the mid-face creates a flat and tired appearance. It can also lead to a saggy or sad appearance because the contours in the lower face are not as sharp and defined as they once were. Dermal fillers work to restore facial volume, creating a more refreshed and youthful appearance.

As we age, the fat compartments in our face deflate and descend, although not necessarily in a balanced or predictable fashion. Areas in the mid face tend to deteriorate first, followed by loss of volume around the mouth and jawline. The tip of our nose also descends, and our nasolabial folds deepen. In fact, patients often don’t suspect volume loss until they notice their nasolabial folds have deepened. In addition, with the natural loss of collagen, our skin loses the ability to bounce back, causing it to sag.

The majority of dermal fillers are made of hyaluronic acid – a sugar that is natural to the body. Hyaluronic acid is able to absorb 1000 times its molecular weight in water, making it an ideal treatment for restoring facial volume loss. When injected under the skin, hyaluronic acid fillers temporarily “fill and plump” those areas that are depleted, resulting in a naturally refreshed and less tired appearance. The results from dermal filler treatment are immediate and typically last 9-12 months
