The eyes are the first area of the face to exhibit signs of aging in the form of wrinkles, dark circles and under-eye hollows, which are also called “tear troughs.” Dark circles and under-eye hollows are common concerns for both women and men, and it contributes to a “tired-looking,” sunken appearance.

If you have under-eye hollows, we understand it can be frustrating. No one wants to “look tired” all the time. If you find dark circles difficult to conceal with makeup, we offer under-eye hollows treatments that will rejuvenate your face and create a more youthful look.

Before we discuss under-eye hollows treatments, let’s take a closer look at this common skin condition.

What Are Under-Eye Hollows?

Under-eye hollows and dark circles around the eyes affect men and women of all ages and ethnicities. Under-eye hollows or under-eye darkness is considered a blanket term for vascular darkness caused by hyperpigmentation. This is more common in certain ethnicities and exhibits thin skin with excessive pigmentation under the eyes.

Under-eye hollows can be caused by a lack of volume in the under-eye area as well as:

  • Loss of fat in the lower eyelids
  • Stress
  • Lack of sleep
  • Dehydration
  • Sun exposure
  • Hereditary effect
  • Aging
  • Ethnicity

The most common cause of under-eye hollows is aging. As we grow older, fat and bone density are lost, including those in our faces and the supporting structures that hold everything in place. A loss of collagen occurs, resulting in thinner, more translucent skin around the eyes.

Under-Eye Hollows Treatments

While some individuals opt for natural treatments such as the age-old trick of placing cucumbers over the eyes, these home remedies don’t offer long-term solutions. Instead, non-surgical procedures are the most ideal under-eye hollows treatments as they promise long-lasting results that give a natural and appealing look.

If the cause of your under-eye hollows is volume loss, a dermal filler treatment can be the answer. It is a minimally invasive treatment to create and restore volume to the skin that is lost through the aging process. It offers visible improvement as it reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

How to Treat Under Eye Hollows

Dermal Fillers

Our highly trained, fully-licensed staff at APT Medical Aesthetics can perform dermal filler procedures as an under-eye hollows treatment.

The skin under the eye is thin and delicate, and it is important that the right kind of dermal filler is chosen as under-eye hollows treatment. The quality dermal fillers we use for tear troughs have hyaluronic acid, which is a clear substance that is naturally produced by the body. Its main function is to replace lost volume. APT carries a wide variety of dermal fillers and , upon individual assessment, will pick the correct filler just for you.

Another upside of using dermal fillers is the painless application, as hyaluronic acid contains a localized pain reliever,  lidocaine, to ensure the comfort of our patients. The filler is injected into your skin in sessions of approximately 15 to 30 minutes. It is painless, quick, and gives you visible results that you will be proud of.

Under-Eye Hollows Treatments Results: What to Expect

You can expect to receive immediate results after your first dermal filler treatment. Results will continue to improve over the course of two weeks as the filler settles and naturally integrates into your skin.

A common concern for individuals who have gone through under-eye hollows treatments is looking like they “obviously had some work done.” By choosing APT Medical Aesthetics, you don’t have to worry about this! Our experienced injectors will ensure that you only get natural-looking results.

Like other kinds of treatments, under-eye hollow treatments have immediate, temporary effects, such as swelling, redness, and bruising. Patients are able to return to their normal activities and lifestyles without any issues at all.

Some Things to Keep in Mind During Your Recovery

  • Avoid alcohol consumption for 24 hours after your treatment;
  • Always apply sunscreen to protect the skin when going outside;
  • Avoid performing tiring exercises immediately after your treatment; and
  • Apply a cold compress to the affected area to reduce swelling
  • Do not combine a toxin treatment around your eyes in the same session as the filler treatment for your under eye hollows as this can increase swelling.

How Long Do Under-Eye Hollows Treatments Results Last?

Depending on the dermal filler that is used, you can expect to enjoy fuller and lighter under-eyes for as long as six to 18 months.

You may need multiple under-eye hollows treatments to obtain optimal results. As this is such a delicate area, we inject very conservatively in this area, as it is always easier to add than to take away filler.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

If it is volume loss that is making you look tired, then you may be a candidate for dermal filler treatment under your eyes. Contact us to know more.

If it is volume loss that is causing your dark circles, then dermal filler treatment would likely offer a visible improvement. If your dark circles are hereditary, or not accompanied with volume loss, then you wouldn’t likely be a candidate for dermal filler.

Because the skin under the eye is very thin and delicate, it is very important that a suitable dermal filler is chosen for this area. Some of the fillers we regularly use for the tear troughs include Belotero Soft, Belotero Balance, and Juvederm® Volbella which are all comprised of hyaluronic acid.

Not at all! All of the hyaluronic acid fillers that we use for the tear troughs contain a localized pain reliever which keeps the procedure comfortable.
