What Is Facial Volume Loss?

Loss of facial volume occurs naturally due to the skin’s aging process, which typically first appears in the lower part of the face. Due to aging, certain areas of the face lose their plumpness and structure in the absence of fat and as the natural collagen production decreases. Simultaneously, the body’s production of hyaluronic acid also diminishes, leaving the skin dehydrated and gaunt.

Facial volume loss can also be accelerated or worsened by several contributing factors, such as:

  • Rapid weight loss – Losing too much weight too fast can lead to loss of volume and sagging skin around the face and other parts of the body.
  • Chronic sun exposure – Harmful UV rays penetrate the skin and speed up the breakdown of collagen and elastin, leading to sun damage like loss of facial volume, elasticity, dryness, and sunspots.
  • Excessive stress – Stress causes free radical damage that accelerates the effects of aging.
  • Smoking and nicotine exposureSmokers have a depleted supply of vitamin C, which leads to thinning layers of the skin, muscle tone deterioration, and degenerated supply of collagen and elastin.
  • Maxillofacial trauma – Physical trauma or injury to the face can result in loss of facial volume.
  • An underlying medical condition – There are many physical illnesses with severe symptoms that can lead to weight loss and facial volume loss. If you are experiencing unexplained loss of volume around the facial area, see your doctor immediately to rule out any medical causes.
  • Hormonal imbalance – As women age, the supply of estrogen hormone that communicates how much volume is needed in certain areas of the body decreases.

Facial Volume Loss in the Cheeks

Sagging cheeks is caused by loss of facial fat, pulling the skin downwards and moving the eye area to a lower position. Flat cheeks with loose, hanging skin where the jaw meets the neckline are called jowls.

Facial Volume Loss in the Under-Eye Area

Loss of facial volume around the eyes can be seen around the eyebrows and the under-eye area. The loss of orbital fat in the lower eyelids area can create hollow or sunken eyes, which are also called tear-trough hollows or under-eye hollows.

Facial Volume Loss in the Lips

Fine lines around the mouth are the first telltale sign of the onset of facial volume loss in the lips. The full lips you have in your youth start to deflate, lose their definition, and become thinner and smaller.

Other indications of facial volume loss include the deepening of the nasolabial folds (parentheses lines running from the nose to the corner of the mouth), the appearance of marionette lines (lines running from the corner of the mouth to the chin), and hollowing of the temples.

Treatment Options for Facial Volume Loss

Although aging may be inevitable, facial volume loss is no longer a big deal because of modern technology’s advances in minimally-invasive and non-surgical cosmetic procedures. Facial volume loss treatment is effectively completed with the use of dermal fillers. At APT Medical Aesthetics, we offer various dermal filler injections to rejuvenate and refresh the appearance without any downtime.

Juvederm

Juvederm is a hyaluronic acid (HA) dermal filler that displays promising results for the treatment of facial volume loss, fine lines and wrinkles, and depressed scars. This product can be administered in different treatment areas to address sagging cheeks, lift jowls, and add more definition to the lips and the jawline.

Radiesse

Radiesse is an injectable dermal filler treatment that uses non-toxic calcium hydroxylapatite (CaHa) microspheres. It effectively introduces volume and definition to the chin, nose, cheeks, and forehead to achieve a more chiselled or contoured effect. Radiesse dermal filler injections can also be used for the treatment of aging hands.

Results You Can Expect

Dermal fillers can work wonders for the treatment of facial volume loss. All it takes is a quick, in-office procedure lasting as little as 15 minutes. For the best results, wait for at least a week or two for the products to completely settle on the treatment area.

With both Radiesse and Juvederm, you can expect significant results immediately after treatment. Notice how your facial contours become more refined and the symmetry of your facial features improve with the newly restored facial volume in the treated area(s). Your cheeks no longer sag, but are instead tightened and lifted and your previously loose and hanging skin around the jawline is replaced with a more beautiful bone structure.

Radiesse offers continuous improvements in the next two years. Its CaHa component comes with an added benefit of promoting new collagen in the skin, giving you a more youthful appearance longer.

How Long Do Treatment Results Last?

Dermal fillers that use hyaluronic acid as their active ingredients like Juvederm and Belotero offer temporary results that last for 6 to 12 months or sometimes longer, depending on how fast your body metabolizes the product. On the other hand, Radiesse reportedly lasts for up to 15 months.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

As we age, volume loss in the mid-face creates a flat and tired appearance. It can also lead to a saggy or sad appearance because the contours in the lower face are not as sharp and defined as they once were. Dermal fillers work to restore facial volume, creating a more refreshed and youthful appearance.

As we age, the fat compartments in our face deflate and descend, although not necessarily in a balanced or predictable fashion. Areas in the mid face tend to deteriorate first, followed by loss of volume around the mouth and jawline. The tip of our nose also descends, and our nasolabial folds deepen. In fact, patients often don’t suspect volume loss until they notice their nasolabial folds have deepened. In addition, with the natural loss of collagen, our skin loses the ability to bounce back, causing it to sag.

The majority of dermal fillers are made of hyaluronic acid – a sugar that is natural to the body. Hyaluronic acid is able to absorb 1000 times its molecular weight in water, making it an ideal treatment for restoring facial volume loss. When injected under the skin, hyaluronic acid fillers temporarily “fill and plump” those areas that are depleted, resulting in a naturally refreshed and less tired appearance. The results from dermal filler treatment are immediate and typically last 9-12 months
