Morpheus8 vs. Microneedling

Morpheus8 and microneedling are both renowned treatments for reducing fine lines and scars. While they both promote a more supple and youthful appearance, these two treatments work slightly differently.

If you want to get the best results out of your treatment, our ultimate guide to Morpheus8 vs. microneedling will help you make the right choice.

What is Microneedling?

Microneedling is a collagen-induction therapy most commonly used to reduce the look of facial scars and fine lines. It is also used as a transdermal delivery system for some serums or drugs, including some vaccines.

In skincare, it works by inflicting micro-injuries on the skin using ultra-fine needles, triggering a mild inflammatory response to induce wound healing. To repair the injury, the skin produces new collagen and elastin. As the wound heals, the skin’s matrix is remodelled, resulting in better skin tone and overall texture.

Microneedling can be done once a month at home using a dermaroller, but in-clinic treatments are usually more effective due to the techniques used by professionals. Also, most in-clinic treatments involve the use of medical-grade skincare products that help improve the results of microneedling.

Results vary depending on the patient, but noticeable results can be seen after one or two sessions, with visible continuous improvement for up to six months after the last session.

What is Morpheus8?

Morpheus8 follows the same logic behind microneedling, except the needles used in Morpheus8 also send radiofrequency energy into the skin, heating it up and amplifying the effect of the therapy.

A Morpheus8 treatment is expected to deliver a more dramatic result than regular microneedling, and can be performed anywhere on the body. Sessions are usually spaced five weeks apart during the initial treatment, then yearly for maintenance.

Like regular microneedling, it takes several sessions to achieve the best results. Although, many patients see improvements in less than one month, just after one session.

Morpheus8 vs Microneedling

Wondering whether Morpheus8 or microneedling will work better for your skin concern? Here are the pros and cons you need to note:

Procedure Benefits Limitations

  • Reaches deeper layers of the skin
  • Minimal risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH)
  • Can be used on active acne as an alternative to topical and oral medications
  • Results are more obvious and last longer
  • Better for older skin
  • Can’t be done at home
  • Cannot be performed during an active infection, such as acne
  • Needs more sessions to achieve visbile results
  • More expensive
  • May result in unwanted fat loss in treated area
  • Can be uncomfortable or painful for some patients

Aftercare and Recovery

Both Morpheus8 and regular microneedling are minimally invasive procedures and require little to no downtime.

However, redness, itching and swelling may happen after a session. These are normal microneedling and Morpheus8 side effects, and they usually last no longer than a few days.

Avoid Washing Too Soon, Applying Makeup, and Sun Exposure

To prevent infection and to avoid interfering with the healing process, it is recommended not to wash the treated area for at least 12 hours. It is also advised to avoid sun exposure and to wait up to three days before using any skincare or makeup products to prevent irritation, unless otherwise instructed by your doctor.

Slight Scabbing is Normal

You might notice slight scabbing after the wounds have healed. This is also normal and usually happens a few days to a week after each session. When this happens, avoid picking the scabs to make sure the skin heals properly and evenly.

Follow a Doctor-Recommended Skincare Regimen

Special skincare may be prescribed by your doctor to improve the healing process and treatment results. If you want to use your old skincare products, make sure to ask your doctor when the best time is to return to your pre-treatment regimen.
